Most of us brush our teeth every day without really thinking about it—it’s just part of the routine. But here’s a little question we like to ask our patients:
Are you actually brushing the right way?
You’d be surprised how many people have been brushing the same way since they were kids—and they’re either missing spots, brushing too hard, or just rushing through it. It happens. Life gets busy.
But the good news is, a few small tweaks to your brushing routine can go a long way in keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
Here’s what we recommend—and what we often remind our own patients right here in the office:
---
1. Brush in the Morning and at Night
This one seems obvious, but it’s easy to let it slide—especially at night when you’re tired. We’ve all been there. But brushing twice a day really does matter.
Once in the morning to start fresh. Once before bed to clean off everything from the day. Simple and worth it.
---
2. Two Minutes, Not 20 Seconds
Most people don’t brush nearly as long as they should. Two full minutes feels longer than you’d think, but that’s the sweet spot.
Set a timer, use an electric brush with a built-in timer, or just play a song you like. Whatever works for you—just try not to rush.
---
3. Go Easy on Your Gums
Hard bristles don’t clean better—they just wear things down. We always recommend soft-bristled brushes. They’re gentler on your gums and still clean effectively when used the right way.
Your gums will thank you later.
---
4. No Need to Scrub Like Crazy
Brushing harder doesn’t make your teeth cleaner—it just makes your gums irritated. Think gentle circles, not back-and-forth scrubbing.
Imagine you’re polishing something delicate, not scrubbing a burnt pan.
---
5. Yep—Brush Your Tongue Too
It only takes a few seconds, but brushing your tongue helps get rid of bacteria that causes bad breath.
You can use your brush or a tongue scraper, whichever feels better for you.
